Pathétique?

One of my Dinosaur King teammates when I was at SEGA’s AM3 department was KohaD, who went on to direct the maimai series of arcade music games. I don’t think many of these cabinets made it out of Japan, but KohaD asked me to do the localization, as well as write the lyrics to one of the songs, a little ditty called “Color My World.”
But actually, the original title was “Color My World (Pathétique),” using the French word for melancholic or pitiful. The original Japanese title used the word “悲愴” (hisou), which means the same thing, so the vibe is “things are bad now, but it’ll get better, so buck up young blood,” or something like that. Of course I peppered the lyrics with color words, in keeping with the theme and all.
Lyrically, this is as straight ahead as I can get. Nary a pop culture reference to be found! It had to be simple and to the point, mainly because a Japanese singer would be singing it, so I had to choose words that were easy to pronounce and go easy on the syllables. Hiromi Seguchi did a great job, as one would expect from a pro.
The song is available in the embed above, as well as on the albums maimai SEGA Sounds Vol.2 -Adult Healing Pack- (quite a name) and maimai ALL PERFECT COLLECTiON.
Lyrics
Stroll through another day
And all around is gray
I’m on my own
Don’t want to be alone
Add a little color to my world
Straight down a road that’s mine
Paint the town as red as wine
I’m not afraid
It will be okay
Add a little color to my world
Storms may come my way
Take all the color from my eyes
Let it rain
Let it wash over me
Because I know a rainbow is at the end
Now is my time to shine
Golden light, life’s so divine
I’m feeling free
Just by being me
Add a little color to my world
Color my world (x3)
Now when I’m feeling blue
I know just what to do
I face the day
Walk through it my own way
Add a little color to my world
Colors all around
And new ones to be found
Don’t hesitate
It is not too late
Add a little color to my world
