From January to April 2005, Ubisoft hired me to write a blog for Sam Fisher, the lead character from their excellent Splinter Cell games. The blog offered a humorous take on a covert operative’s life outside of the field.
Ubisoft gave me free rein to basically write whatever I want, so this blog basically reads like me, but I tried to stay true to the terse (yet darkly comic) character of Sam Fisher. He’s an older character, so there’s definitely a “back in my day” vibe to some of the entries as well. It’s also very much of its time, so a lot of decades old references to experience here.

The only thing I wasn’t allowed to delve into was backstory about his daughter Sarah, as Ubisoft had plans for that character. Aside from that, I could do pretty much do as I pleased, and I took advantage of it. I also put my low-rent Photoshop skills to use in some of the imagery. I was studying Japanese full time then, so this blog was a welcome release, and a pleasure to write.
The plan was to post the blog entries here, but after checking the length, it came out to almost 17,000 words — more than your average novel. As such, for now, I invite you to check out the Sam Fisher Block archive on the Wayback Machine.
